The nef is a development of the cog, as a nef has solid castles as opposed to the cog which has a double-ended keel and temporary castles that are platforms supported by wooden pillars. A nef is very similar in appearance to a carrack, however carracks tend to be larger and/or more heavily armed. Armed with 4 breech loading cannons and 4 swivels.
