In September 1962, Lennon had his 325 painted to black, it is unclear what was the reason for, sources said that it was to match up the band's look or John took it to a shop to get it painted black. Before they make their appearance in the Sullivan show, Rickenbacker gifted him a new '64 325 model painted in jetglo finish, it appeared first in the Sullivan show and their US concerts. He would use his new '64 325 model as his primary guitar in all of their 64 and 65 tours, and would retire the '58 325 model.
