Shoguante Infantry Jingasa

The Hoheigumi Infantry were a modern infantry unit created by the Tokugawa shogunate during the late Bakumatsu period as part of its military reforms. Formed in the early 1860s, the unit was trained using Western, especially French-style, tactics and equipped with modern firearms rather than traditional weapons. Composed largely of lower-ranking samurai and commoners, the Hoheigumi served mainly in Kyoto and the Kantō region, performing garrison and security duties. During the Boshin War, they fought for the shogunate but were defeated alongside it. The unit was disbanded after 1868, influencing Japan’s later national army.
