Tokugawa General Jingasa

During the Keiō Reforms, Tokugawa generals formed part of the shogunate’s effort to modernize its military before the Boshin War. Many officers abandoned traditional samurai methods in favor of Western-style command structures, drill, uniforms, and tactics. With assistance from French military advisers, Tokugawa forces were reorganized into a more professional army equipped with modern rifles and artillery. Generals were expected to command these newly organized formations, enforce discipline, and coordinate infantry, cavalry, and artillery. These reforms produced some of the most modern troops available to the Tokugawa shogunate on the eve of its collapse.
